The Battle of Bossenden Wood

Postby Brian » Sun May 09, 2010 11:06 am

Recently, while researching the Price family tree I was directed to Dunkirk and Boughton where I stumbled upon the Battle of Bossenden Wood which I, or any of my family, had ever heard of before. Obviously I need to spend some time in Maidstone records office, where hopefully I will be able to confirm one or two things and perhaps go back further, but while I was in the area I understand there are a few artefacts and a banner from the rebellion in a collection and was wondering if anyone could tell me where, and if, they could possibly be seen.

Thanks Brian

Belatedly, some of the artefacts are in a private collection in Hernhill, some are at the Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre Museum in Faversham. This is run voluntarily by the Faversham Society (ticfaversham@btconnect.com)

Thanks for getting back to me Arthur.

I have just read the book Battle in Bossenden Wood by P. G. Rogers and realise some of the artefacts may be in a private collection. Anyway I will have a look in the Fleur De Lys Heritage Centre shortly as I seem to be heading to the Faversham area while looking into my family history.

You may be interested to know that I had traced back to Mary Price living in Brighton, with her three children all born in Dunkirk. But drew a blank as on the census she said she was a widow.

I could not find any record of her husband William's death but somehow found a William Price involved in The Battle of Bossenden Wood which is well recorded but still could find a link. I needed to try Maidstone Records Office to get further but was side tracked with other members of the family.

Just recently looking through the Faversham Website I found the story of Mary and her children in the Union Workhouse which seems to confirm that he is the William Price I have been looking for. Now I have to check at Maidstone.

Also while looking round the graveyard at the small church just as you drive into Dunkirk I found a number of Price headstones which may be connected. We will have to see!
